Chris Evans helps Regina King up the stairs to the stage after her Oscars win

Okay listen up, all you dudes out there! It’s time for some life lessons from Chris Evans.

Wonder why women are fine with this when he does it, but they find you opening a car door or offering to carry stuff for them annoying? Well, wonder no more! It works like this:

A large number of women have had to learn how to dodge and swerve and sometimes even slap away men’s hands from the time they hit puberty - and sometimes before. Ladies, cis and trans both, are unfortunately experienced at being groped, poked, prodded, “helped”, and otherwise humiliated and threatened by men. Then also there’s the condescending attitude that of course we need a man’s help, and we should be grateful he offered it.

No thanks.

Chris is doing something very different here, and you’ll see it in similar video clips of him at other events. You can read his mental process in his body language. He starts with just clapping and congratulating. He offers nothing until there is a need, which doesn’t happen here until Regina’s shoe gets caught on her dress. Since women have literally tripped up the stairs at this ceremony several times over the years (because the shoe and clothing requirements are ridiculous), it is reasonable at this stage to think that my-shoe-caught-on-my-dress is a problem that actually needs to be addressed. This is when Chris offers.

How he offers matters. He starts with an open hand toward her, but this is a big no-no. Open hands are a red flag. Open hands grope and grab and shove. He quickly corrects by flipping his arm over and offering his forearm instead. This makes it her choice whether to grab on or ignore him. She doesn’t have to contend with a potentially threatening hand while she’s also contending with her dress.

He also bends down a bit to do this. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but Chris is kind of a tall, beefy guy. Guys like that can be a bit intimidating without meaning to be, at least when they’re up close. Also, his arm is a bit too high to be useful to her if he stays at his full height. So he bends down. This is even more visible in the video from him doing this for Betty White at the 2015 Oscars, because she’s shorter than Regina, I guess.

He offers his arm for exactly as long as she leans on it. When she lets go, he steps back. This is a guy who isn’t interested in showing off how much she needs his help. He’s just interested in helping, and when he’s not needed, he’s done. He goes back to sit down. He doesn’t hover.

Also, Regina King knows who Chris Evans is. His behavior at work thus far has certainly made it into the rumor mill, thus factoring into whether she accepts help from him. Is he a dudebro or jerk to women at work? That doesn’t appear to be the case.

Women are not helpless. Compared to men, our clothes are more often obstacles to getting where we need to go safely and with our dignity intact, but conversely, we’ve also learned to deal with that better than most men have. It’s not that we never need or want help; like all people, we do sometimes need a hand. It’s just that “some kinds of help are the kinds of help we all could do without.”

If you are offering help to a woman, first make sure she actually appears to be struggling. Second, make yourself as unthreatening as possible and let her do any touching, not the other way around. Third, make sure she can refuse without any consequences. And fourth, back off as soon as she doesn’t need you anymore and let the moment go.

I hadn’t even registered why exactly it was that he was so unthreatening in this and the Betty White assistance incidents, but you’re right. It’s all in the way he helps. It’s not that this is unthreatening behaviour “because he’s Chris Evans” – its because his body language is genuinely unthreatening and merely helpful.

A+ analysis – I hadn’t even registered the details of why and how this behaviour was 100% ok, while from another man (who probably would have gone about it differentky) it might not have been

People are helping premature babies by crocheting tiny octopuses. The tentacles are thought to mimic the feel of an umbilical cord, and babies who cuddle an octo are less likely to pull out their monitors and tubes.

When hospitals that participate in the Octo Project noted an increase in the overall health of their preemies, volunteers around the world began flooding them with donations.

You know, I’m seeing a lot of discussion of this on my dash and have zero interest in putting a target on my back by responding to the actual posts, but I just want to remind everyone that

a) A movie does not endorse the advertisers who buy ad space from the cinema to play before the movie. Captain Marvel was absolutely made with the support of the USAF, that’s in the credits, and we can talk about that and we can talk about institutionalized violence in cinema and the way the Pengaton is in bed with Hollywood, but if you’re going to criticize a film you can’t use ads it has no control over to do so.

b) The USAF ads you may see before Captain Marvel are not part of the movie and aren’t required to be shown before the movie by the studio, and I know this because at three different cinemas on three different days in Chicago (Roosevelt ICON, Navy Pier IMAX, Arclight) I saw Captain Marvel with zero ads for the Air Force of any kind.

c) If you don’t want to see the ads for the Air Force ahead of your movie and are near an Arclight cinema, they have a no-ads (previews only) before the movie policy. And they also have the best popcorn.

You can absolutely 100% criticise the air force for showing those ads and trying to get impressionable people to join up, though.

Oh, for sure. But the super shady recruitment tactics of the US military is something that should be a separate conversation from criticism of Captain Marvel as a propaganda film – the use of film for recruitment can be a part of that conversation, but I think if we’re going to discuss what Captain Marvel is and isn’t, as a piece of entertainment and/or propaganda, USAF ads running before it because they bought ad space just like Nike and Coke and Target did shouldn’t be included as part of the work.

(For the record, I believe Captain Marvel actually is less pro-military than almost any other Marvel Studios film, and most Hollywood-produced films for that matter, and I think it’s getting the bullshit it’s getting because it’s a woman-led film. I am seeing ten thousand more posts about Captain Marvel’s relationship with the military than I ever have about the ex-Army or ex-Air Force male characters that are all over Phase 1.)

It’s not just the US, Australia had a combined defense forces ad aimed at young women before Captain Marvel out here. It was literally a ‘see the world! meet new and interesting people’ ad, like it’s 1915 all over again. I mean, the US has a far, far bigger military, but other countries are milking this for all it’s worth, too. I think the only Marvel film I’ve seen at the movies in the last few years that didn’t have one was Spider-Verse.

Also really not into the people rushing to call Mr. Rogers problematique because he was worried about the ramifications of Francois Clements being outed in 1969 when 1. He regretted suggesting he stay closeted and 2. In the article y’all keep quoting Clements himself says:

The language he uses clearly frames this as a discussion the two of them had and mutually agreed upon!

Like it’s really rich to watch people act like Rogers was this homophobic capitalist bully instead of a man who was ALSO CLOSETED being afraid for the safety of his friend and presumably himself (because yes protecting the show meant their literal livelihoods) in the goddamn 60’s/early 70’s.

I still remember the soccer mom freakouts over Spongebob and Tinky Winky the fucking teletubby in the 00’s, and losers on this site who are afraid to order their own pizza think it’s woke to blame a bi man for he and his gay friend/coworker’s need/decision to remain closeted in an even more openly hostile homophobic era like PLEASE get some fucking perspective and stop blaming lgbt people for feeling they had to hide to protect themselves

Don’t love the “WOKE mocking people with anxiety” like but otherwise mood

I literally have anxiety I’m making fun of people who will fall back on their own anxiety as an excuse for saying and doing whatever they want while also criticizing people who could not be open about their sexuality for tangible life-threatening reasons. Like if you’re going to be afraid of phones you should maybe have an ounce of sympathy for why someone would be terrified of being outed in the 60s 🤷‍♂️

This is also why retroactively blaming people for things doesn’t really work. The world was much different not very long ago - I was dealing with gay friends beaten in the streets up to the late 90s. What happened in the past does not mean what it does today; I’m surprised at the amount of casual sexism and homophobia in programs from that era and those were supposed to be the progressive ones. History grades on a curve and it takes time to get to the level of acceptance we have now. And illness - mental or otherwise - does not give anyone a free pass to be an asshole.

Honestly sometimes I think everyone wants to ‘cancel’ people. Like they’re so keen to find fault in anyone and everyone that it’s difficult to imagine who would fit this level of perfection. Since it changes every day (history, as above), it’s impossible to keep ahead of that curve.
