Also really not into the people rushing to call Mr. Rogers problematique because he was worried about the ramifications of Francois Clements being outed in 1969 when 1. He regretted suggesting he stay closeted and 2. In the article y’all keep quoting Clements himself says:
The language he uses clearly frames this as a discussion the two of them had and mutually agreed upon!
Like it’s really rich to watch people act like Rogers was this homophobic capitalist bully instead of a man who was ALSO CLOSETED being afraid for the safety of his friend and presumably himself (because yes protecting the show meant their literal livelihoods) in the goddamn 60’s/early 70’s.
I still remember the soccer mom freakouts over Spongebob and Tinky Winky the fucking teletubby in the 00’s, and losers on this site who are afraid to order their own pizza think it’s woke to blame a bi man for he and his gay friend/coworker’s need/decision to remain closeted in an even more openly hostile homophobic era like PLEASE get some fucking perspective and stop blaming lgbt people for feeling they had to hide to protect themselves
Don’t love the “WOKE mocking people with anxiety” like but otherwise mood
I literally have anxiety I’m making fun of people who will fall back on their own anxiety as an excuse for saying and doing whatever they want while also criticizing people who could not be open about their sexuality for tangible life-threatening reasons. Like if you’re going to be afraid of phones you should maybe have an ounce of sympathy for why someone would be terrified of being outed in the 60s 🤷♂️
This is also why retroactively blaming people for things doesn’t really work. The world was much different not very long ago - I was dealing with gay friends beaten in the streets up to the late 90s. What happened in the past does not mean what it does today; I’m surprised at the amount of casual sexism and homophobia in programs from that era and those were supposed to be the progressive ones. History grades on a curve and it takes time to get to the level of acceptance we have now. And illness - mental or otherwise - does not give anyone a free pass to be an asshole.
Honestly sometimes I think everyone wants to ‘cancel’ people. Like they’re so keen to find fault in anyone and everyone that it’s difficult to imagine who would fit this level of perfection. Since it changes every day (history, as above), it’s impossible to keep ahead of that curve.
