Conservationists release 155 giant tortoises on Galapagos island
Conservationists have released 155 giant tortoises on an island in the Galapagos to help replace a similar species that died out 150 years ago, officials aid Thursday.
The young tortoises, of the breed Chelonoidis hoodensis, were set free on Santa Fe island, the Galapagos National Park service announced.
The tortoises, each aged around 10-12 years old, were raised at the Fausto Llerena breeding center and are part of a program to repopulate the island at the center of the Pacific archipelago.
Also known as the Espanola Giant Tortoise, the newly freed reptiles are a similar species to the Chelonoidis spp, which are today extinct.
They originally come from Espanola Island, also known as Hood Island, in the far southeast of the Galapagos chain.

There’s a lot of talk about physical violence and employment discrimination against trans people, but there’s one aspect you don’t hear much about: health care.
According to 2011′s National Transgender Discrimination Survey, nearly 20% of survey respondents reported having been refused care because they’re transgender. More than 25% reported being harassed in a doctor’s office, and 50% had to actually educate their doctors on aspects of trans health care.
“I have been refused emergency room treatment even when delivered to the hospital by ambulance with numerous broken bones and wounds,” says one survey respondent.
But a group of four trans people have teamed up to provide a simple service: connect other folks with trans-friendly medical providers.

I’ve never heard of the show, but ginseng is a big deal. It sells for a lot, and when you harvest it it’s important that you actually leave the majority of the ginseng in the patch or the patch won’t grow more and will disappear.
People don’t care, however, and they pick the entire patch so that no new ginseng grows there, making it even more rare.
People I know who have ginseng on their farms usually aren’t interested in selling it, but it’s a very hush-hush thing. If word gets around you might have ginseng on your property, the wrong people Always find out and sneak onto your property to find it and steal it.
It’s serious. I’ve known people who’ve dealt with armed ginseng thieves on their land in SE Ohio.
I’ve talked about this before and been laughed at bc it sounds like “redneck business” but I don’t think having men with guns sneaking around your property to steal from you is funny. The idea of them getting startled when my friends’ kids or animals get too close is scary.
I also knew an ecologist who was doing research on Ginseng, and someone literally broke into their lab and stole their maps marking the research sites. It’s not easy to get into a lab. They worked hard and risked a lot. It was absolutely ridiculous.
People are already highly defensive of what they consider their “territory” when it’s not even their land. I’ve known guys who’ve had their tires slashed when they went to hunt grouse on public, federal land, because some other hunters think of that as “their spot.”
So get private property, trespassing, and money involved, and people get pretty scary.

okay this is possibly bonkers advice but I’ve found that writing a cover letter is so easy if you just like. briefly inhabit the persona of a high elf who thinks they’re hot shit and cannot imagine why any of their previous work experience would be anything less than gobsmackingly impressive. “as you will see in my resume, I have extensive experience with…” “I am ideal for this position because…” “I’ve noticed this thing you do well and here’s how I will help do it even better…” just really go for it you know, just act like you’re already half hired
