I was at a party tonight with this elementary school teacher from another country and she said something in her language and I thought I knew one of the words so I said so and she smiled real big and clapped her hands and said “yaaaaay!!!!” And it trigggered some sort of Good Kid Gold Star reaction within me. I was like : D !!!!! I was eight years old in that moment. If I’m ever rich before I give my wealth to the people I’m hiring an elementary school teacher to follow me around and praise me for basic tasks.

Writer tries to use the internet without relying on Amazon, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, or Apple. Writer struggles. A lot. Not because she can’t stop googling things, but because Google is integrated with everything, and anything it isn’t is hooked into is partnered with at least one of the other four.
For an example, she details the long process of figuring out how to send a large file without relying on the Google iCloud or Amazon Web Services:
My Gmail alternatives—ProtonMail and Riseup—tell me the file is too large; they tap out at 25 MB. Google Drive and Dropbox aren’t options, Dropbox because it’s hosted by Amazon’s AWS and relies on Google for sign-in. Other file-sharing sites also rely on the tech giants for web hosting services.
…O’Brien directs me first to Send.Firefox.com, an encrypted file-sharing service operated by Mozilla. But… it uses the Google Cloud, so it won’t load. O’Brien then sends me to Share.Riseup.net, a file-sharing service from the same radical tech collective that is hosting my personal email, but it only works for files up to 50 MB.
O’Brien’s last suggestion is Onionshare, a tool for sharing files privately via the “dark web,” i.e. the part of the web that’s not crawled by Google and requires the Tor browser to get to. I know this one actually. My friend Micah Lee, a technologist for the Intercept, made it. Unfortunately, when I go to Onionshare.org to download it, the website won’t load.
“Hah, yes,” emails Micah when I ask about it. “Right now it’s hosted by AWS.”
The troubling implications of tech monopolies on our private data are discussed, as well as potential solutions that don’t sound very appealing at all:
An uncomfortable idea I keep coming up against this week is that, if we want to get away from monopolies and surveillance economies, we might need to rethink the assumption that everything on the internet should be free.
So when I try to create a fourth folder in ProtonMail to organize my email and it tells me that I need to upgrade from a free to a premium account to do so, I decide to fork over 48 euros (about $50) for the year. In return, I get a 5 GB email account that doesn’t have its contents scanned and monetized.
However, I’m well aware that not everyone has $50 dollars to spare for something that they can easily get for “free,” so if that’s the way things go, the rich will have privacy online and the poor (and most vulnerable) will have their data exploited.
I really recommend reading the full article. It also touches on the unhealthy dependence these companies have created in technology and the impossibility of avoiding these tech monopolies. It has definitely got me thinking more about my privacy online and tech use.

its been said over and over by lots of people but it still boggles my mind that people think people will just stop working if theres a UBI like
if you tell someone is on minimum wage “hey you make $58/day at your job, and im gonna give you an extra $115/day regardless of how much you work” there will probably be some who are now living on $115/day but most people are gonna look at that and go “fuck yeah! i make $173/day now!”
meanwhile if you tell someone making $40k “hey you can make $30k without working” there might be a few people who take a $10,000 pay cut and take an extended staycation, but just about everyone is gonna go “holy shit i make $70k now!”
and of course everyone who does walk away from their shitty jobs ends up forcing their bosses to make the job either less shitty or better paying so that they can get people who are willing to do it. which means that option of $115/day for no work or $173/day with a full time job suddenly becomes $300/day with a full time job
opposition to UBI really just boils down to a belief in the capitalist propaganda that if your boss treats you like a person the world you know will crumble
I agree 100% with this but I’d also like to add an extra layer of nuance
Which is that of the small percentage of people who would quit their jobs when given a UBI I don’t think most of them would stop working, they’d just stop working for money, probably temporarily.
There’s a great Charles Stross article which I cannot find right now, about UBI and he points out that he knows lots of writers who would have happily spent a year or two making only a basic income (which in most plans just keeps you a hair above the poverty line), for a chance at working full time on their writing. And firstly, that’s hard work, its just work that doesn’t pay well. But he also says in the same article, that he knows very few who would have stuck with that for more than that before they decided they enjoyed disposable income and got another paying job.
The two groups, also, who worked less during the MINcome experiment were teens and mothers of young children (who attended school and raised children).
Is there an amount given for children, as well? I’m really curious. (I’m down either way.)
that varies by implementation. the numbers here are just based on “30k seems reasonable. how does that spread out if you assume a 40 hour 5-day week?”
Things that happen with UBI:
- Parents spend more time with their kids
- Kids do better in school
- Domestic violence rates go down
Things that DON’T happen with UBI:
- People just stop working en masse
Also, take into account that there a lot of jobs out there right now that only pay commission that some people (like me) would really enjoy but just can’t afford to have their income at risk. I’ve got 2 kids and can’t afford the possibility of having a bad week and not having enough for groceries, or missing a car payment, or it messing up my budget for the first few months while I get into the swing of things. I can’t afford to work 12 hr days 6 days a week for $400 base pay a week for a few months until commissions start coming in. But the job would be enjoyable and it’s something I could be good at. I just can’t afford the first month or two where there’s a learning curve.
UBI would give me the ability to do that.
Like, given we assume that those would fix most of the gofundmes that amount to “help me stay alive because capitalism is shit”, the amount of COMMISSIONS I would make happen, from the other end, if I didn’t feel like crying every time we do budgeting?
The amount of times I’ve been wanting to commission a skilled artist?
Fuck, I’d be tempted to commission @upyrica to illustrate an entire book for me. I even know exactly which one.
And should I learn that we work well together, I’d totally suggest “hey wanna try collaborating on that visual novel like in that one dream I had once upon a time that I told you about?” Cause the risk will be plenty low.
The amount of bandcamp artists I’d be supporting? Not to mention the PATREONS? Indie video game makers? Crochet and Knitwear Designers? Hand-dyed gradient yarns i could FUCKING COMMISSION to lay down some FUCKING MAGIC with my needles and hooks?
Which, in the end, will make their lives so much easier as well? And allow others to take risks because well, if that music/video game making/writing/art/blogging career isn’t working out, they won’t end up destitute?
And that’s just from the creative sector?
The amount of people who’d happily go back to school and go to university now that they’ve had the time and experience to understand what they really want to do with their lives but can’t afford to go into debt over it?
(And don’t get me started on all the people who stay in abusive situations because of finances who would now have an actual chance to be free.)
I think UBI might actually allow more disabled people to work in some capacity, if they want to.
The way we do SSI/SSDI is so fucking difficult to get on and isn’t really survivable when you ARE on it, or who the government has decided are not “disabled enough”. As a result, there are plenty of disabled people who are working incredibly hard and being pushed past their limits, when they shouldn’t have to.
With UBI I think you’d see some disabled people WOULD stop working - because they really shouldn’t have been having to.
A lot of disabilities DO get significantly worse with stress. If you’re not frantic about the constant threat of homelessness/starvation/etc, then some of your symptoms might improve, which might mean you have the option of doing something part time, or doing something creative, because it’s enjoyable or to have a little extra spending money.

I write this bcz I’m a huge language enthusiast and I’m frustrated about the way most methods and language classes/courses approach the process of learning. I’m not a professional but I have a lot of experience in studying foreign languages: I have taught myself Lithuanian and reached the upper intermediate level (B2) in 4-5 years without much help from others, and in Spanish reaching the same level took me only 2 years bcz I simultaneously studied it at school and already knowing French helped me a little. I want to help everyone who wants to start a new language, does not have the possibility to join a language course or just feels frustrated of the stagnation they might experience in the early phase of learning a foreign language.
So, if you want to learn a new language, I suggest following tips:
• Immerse yourself from the beginning! This is really important so that you can get yourself familiar with the intonation and pronunciation of the language. Listen to radio or tv and try to read whatever you can (ingredient lists from the food packages, newspaper articles, whatever!) it doesn’t matter if you can’t understand much yet, it will come! If you start a language with a new alphabet learn the alphabet really well first thing.
• Get an overview of the grammatical structure of the language! This is often not properly done in language courses where you learn some vocabulary and greetings but after 60 pages of the textbook you still have no idea how many verb tenses or noun cases the language has. Take a look even at the “hardest” topics, bcz they might not be that hard after all. (for example the Spanish equivalent of past perfect is much easier than the present tense)
• With that being said, learn to recognise past tenses even when you are still learning the present tense! I find it absurd that most courses expect you to master present tense _perfectly_ before even taking a look at other tenses. Most of the time, in everyday communication, past tenses are used more frequently than the present tense + in some languages mastering the past tense can also help you to form the conditional. So, learn the past tense earlier than most ppl would recommend!
• In general, study the easiest things first! If you find something particularly difficult you gain more confidence and knowledge if you first focus on what you find more interesting (however, you can’t postpone studying boring topics eternally, especially if you are preparing or hoping to prepare for an exam at some point) In Lithuanian, I taught myself a lot of grammar before learning how to tell the time… and it was ok.
• For material: usually the country’s universities have a reading list on their website which proposes what books one could use to study the language. These are often preferable to handbooks aimed for tourists and some language methods for beginners because those mostly focus on useless vocabulary you might only need when you rent a car or book a room in a hotel. The grammar is often also relatively poorly explained in those “tourist language books”, whereas books that are aimed at immigrants or university students usually focus more on the efficient language acquisition and are written by professors and specialists. If you are persistent enough and google all possible search words in both English and the target language, you can probably find whole textbooks in PDF format, which you can then save on your laptop.
• Don’t get stuck on vocabulary! Remember that grammar is the skeleton of the language and that vocabulary is the muscles hair and eventually the clothes you use to dress up and embellish your apperance. Vocabulary is useful once you know how to use it. For me, learning vocab is the hardest part of a new language, especially bcz I like starting languages that are not really similar to any other languages I know (consider Lithuanian and Greek when I previously knew Finnish, English, French and Spanish) ofc you need to learn some of it to be able to form sentences but most traditional methods focus on that too much. My suggestion is to read a lot: start by children’s books and comics and gradually get more advanced material. When you read them, make notes!! Look up the words you don’t know and don’t be afraid of using unconventional, seemingly challenging ways to learn, such as buying a bilingual poetry collection and trying to decipher what the original poem says and compare it to the translation. 100% recommend, even for the beginner level + it’s a nice way to connect to the culture but still focus on the language itself, not on the way ppl make breakfast in that country. (That’s something that irritates me a lot in most Youtube’s language videos where ppl are just discussing the traditions of the country in English when you had come there to look for the explanation of grammatical structures or just to hear the language being spoken. smh.)
• A really important thing about vocabulary is to learn all the abstract words, such as conjunctions, really soon! For example, if you find yourself in a situation where you have to use the words therefore and otherwise, it is almost impossible to try to explain those words without first translating them to another language.
• Make vocabulary learning more interesting and deep by learning about the etymology of the words you learn. It can be mind-blowing and it helps you to remember the words better.
That’s it!
I hope these tips inspire you in pursuing your interest in foreign languages and facilitate your learning process. I might add more to this if I remember I have forgotten something of great importance.

i have a cat named The Lady and my favourite thing about her is that she manages to have this very petite, delicate face while also being incredibly fat so every time she goes downstairs i just hear like.
THUNK THUNK THUNK THUNK THUnk thunkthunkthunk
and then my mother in the softest, most delighted voice going “oh, hello my wee lady!”

if you abandon your principles the moment you think you have a good reason to want to hurt someone you never had principles in the first place, and yes, this is @ “feminists” whose go-to response to misogynists is body-shaming.

ao3′s orphaning option is cool and a good idea but mostly very fucking funny. i posted this work for fun when i was younger and i still want people to be able to come back to it if they liked it, but now im an adult professional and i dont want it attached to my name. whats the word for that? umm, anonymously posting? no. i want something that indicates i murdered this story’s parents
technically the story’s parents faked their own death and disappeared to go have an office job, and that’s even funnier

We took the drunk train home.
They were all absolutely infatuated with him and whispering about how much they wanted to pet him and then shushing each other saying “no that’s rude you can’t! just leave him alone!” so I told them they can pet him if they want and they were absolutely overwhelmed with happiness, while simultaneously being very concerned for his well-being, continually asking if I was very sure that it was okay and that I should please please tell them if I need them to leave him alone.
Basically, it was a great ending to a VERY long day. Sometimes people are really great.
the composition here is honestly close enough to a medieval painting, and just fuckin beautiful in 2138908 ways, that i think we can go ahead and hang this in a museum, thanks
