Ya know, we talk about raising the minimum wage all the time and that IS super important but something I think we need to talk about more is scheduling in minimum wage jobs. Like, raise it to $15 or whatever, but that doesn’t mean much when you’re getting four hours one week and thirty the next and sometimes you’re an opener then later the week you’re a closer and sometimes you’re working eight days in a row and then other times you’ve suddenly got eight days off. When every paycheck is different it doesn’t really matter what the wage is, things are still gonna get dicey.
One of the best things to happen to me in the last few months was switching to a retail job with a regular schedule. I ALWAYS get 25 hours a week, and it is the same days and times every week. Since that happened I haven’t missed a single bill, and I’ve grown my savings by over $1,500 in just three months, plus paid off a credit card. I’ve also been able to spend more time on my art and writing, been able to go do things with my family more, and do fun stuff for myself more. My wage changed at the beginning of the year due to the yearly increase in Colorado, but the bigger factor in things getting better was guaranteed hours and schedule. I always know what my paycheck is going to be every Friday. Always. I CAN budget now. I CAN plan now. And it is great.
Minimum wage increases are important, but they aren’t the only thing we need to focus on improving for workers.
