Hogwarts houses + activism
When I’m having a hard time figuring out how to make the world a better place, and how to keep myself sustained while doing it, it helps me to break it down by Hogwarts house.
The key is that you need all of them. If you leave one out, or if you do one too much, it will be hard for you and you won’t be as effective.
Slytherin - Self care. I know people talk about this on this blue hellsite like it’s trivial, but it’s really not. You have to figure out what you need for self-care, and you need to do it. If you’re exhausted and burned out, you can’t help anyone else. Just be careful not focus all your attention on this. If you stay wrapped in your own bubble, not only can you not help anyone else, it’ll gradually make you feel worse, too.
Hufflepuff - Connecting with community. Making sure that the people around you are OK is good for them and it’s good for you. We all need to check in with each other, both to take care of each other and to make sure that we’re talking about our values. We can’t fix the world if we don’t fix our own houses first. Just be careful that you don’t mistake your community for the whole world, or your values for everyone’s values.
Ravenclaw - Education. I think this is the one that’s easiest for Tumblr people to fall into too hard. We need to learn about the issues in our world, so that we have context and resources when we try to do something about them. But just reading and yelling on the Internet won’t get anything done, and if you do it for too long, it can lead you into despair. Likewise, it’s important to educate others, but sometimes you just have to back away from the Internet.
Gryffindor - Action. This can be any kind of action: making calls, writing letters, donating money, or taking direct action in marches and protests. None of the rest of this work means anything if we don’t do this, but we can’t only do this, and we can’t do it too much. If all you do is act without thinking, without supporting & being supported by your community, and without taking time to care for yourself, you will exhaust your resources and fight aimlessly. Be strategic when you act, don’t act alone, and work with your community.
I hope this helps. The world is bad right now, but we can make it better. We can do it if we work together, with our eyes open and with compassion for ourselves. We can turn on the light.
