SYLVIA RIVERA WAS INTO POKEMON
HER GIRLFRIEND AT THE TIME BOUGHT HER A STUFFED PIKACHU
WHAT AM I WATCHING
I actually get mad when I see that one picture of her in bed looking all cozy and they crop out the Pikachu slippers she had. Like, it takes away both the fact that she was an actual person, not just some movement icon, and it makes her death seem way less recent since it’s in black and white.
Um, I think @lunamerbruja has a lot to say about this.
yeah, Sylvia’s favorite Pokémon was Pikachu and she died in February of 2002, which really is not as long ago as people may think. Because she was involved with the Gay Liberation Front and Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (later changed “Transvestite” to “Transgender”), people think she lived & died with the movements in the 60′s and 70′s because of the “outdated language” she’s often associated with.
She did step away from organizing work for a decade because of transmisogyny and transphobia, specifically this incident where she was fighting for the stage to speak. here is the video Reina Gossett uploaded to Vimeo that documented this moment.
but yeah, i recently wrote a piece on the 5 facts lesser known about Sylvia Rivera a few weeks ago. She definitely survived lots of trauma, but it’s the little things - like her favorite Pokemon being Pikachu - that i really valued learning about her in my research.
also, the video on this post is actually a piece of a much longer documentary on Sylvia Rivera (almost 2 hours) made by Randy Wickerman, just FYI. i prefer the full version because this above segment is mostly interviews of other people’s thoughts/opinions on Sylvia when she actually talks herself about her life & work, as well as the death of her close friend Marsha P. Johnson.
Always reblog
@mistresskabooms, did you know that one of the first big trans activists was also into Pokemon? You should look her up if you don’t know much about her, this is one of the Stonewall activists we were talking about the other night.
I mean, she’s leader for a reason. Pikachu slippers are a sign of leadership
♡
Well, she passed when you were quite little, but I can’t fault your logic.
The real question is what team would she have chosen for Pokémon Go
No idea.
