I saw a mom at the store today. She had a little baby in a carseat, a two-ish year old and a three-ish year old. She was beautiful in her black pants and colorful tank, her hair in a ponytail. And she had a look on her face that said, “I am this close to killing someone.”
I looked at her strained face, and then at the well behaved and quiet (mainly because of seasonal allergies) five-and-a-half-year-old, watching Netflix and sitting in my cart. And I thought of all the times I’ve been that mom, two seconds from coming unglued from the stress.
I went up to her when our paths in the grocery store crossed again.
“Excuse me…?” I said.
“…Yes..?” She replied, guarded.
“Your boys are beautiful and look healthy. You look like you’re having a hard day, and I wanted to tell you that you’re doing a great job.” I said, without any fuss. Matter of fact.
“I…THANK You…” she stammered.
I nodded to my kid and said, “Been there. You’re doing a great job.” And I left.
I didn’t see her again, and I don’t care if I do. Moms need all the non-judgemental support we can get.
You’re doing great.
Happy Mother’s Day.
