Never talk to me or my 42 trees again

it amuses me to see people being surprised/impressed/amused by this setup, because it’s extremely common on the plains. if you don’t plant a windbreak, your heating and cooling bills are huge, and storms do things like throw the lawnmower through the living room window, take the roof off, or cake the entire north side of the house with six inches of solid ice.

evergreens remain bendy even in the coldest weather, so – wait, no, not the coldest. i remember when i was a kid it got down to like -45 and the norway pines around my house were cracking like gunshots as the sap froze.

maples, incidentally, make that noise around -20f, and i hear it at least once every winter here in southern minnesota. but i only ever heard norway pines make it that one time.

so anyway that’s why we plant pine trees around our houses. because otherwise the wind would freaking kill us.

This is informative and perfectly sensible under the circumstances but I also cannot resist the temptation to compare it to planting stuff all around the boundary of your lot in The Sims

Harry hesitated, but after all, Ron had been honest with him, so he told Ron the truth…

one of my absolute favorite bits from the hp books that never made it into the movies. though admittedly, the ootp movie had to rly condense a lot. i think the relationship between harry and ron is super underrated/overlooked - there’s so much love, trust, and support between them in this scene.

I did another quick Aubrey! she’s the only one who I have a 100% clear picture of; Travis described her hair and she fell immediately into my head. though she’s probably not goth-punk enough, whoops

you know, everyone’s expecting Jake Coolice to be Barry 2.0, but personally I can’t wait for Dr. Harris Bonkers to turn out to be the true mastermind behind it all.  🐇

oddhour:

for the self-conscious beginner: No one makes great things until the world intimately knows their mediocrity. Don’t think of your writing as terrible; think of it as preparing to contribute something great.

for the self-conscious late bloomer: Look at old writing as how far you’ve come. You can’t get to where you are today without covering all that past ground. For that, be proud.

for the perfectionist: Think about how much you complain about things you love—the mistakes and retcons in all your favorite series—and how you still love them anyway. Give yourself that same space.

for the realist: There will be people who hate your story even if it’s considered a classic. But there will be people who love your story, even if it is strange and unpopular.

for the fanfic writer: Your work isn’t lesser for not following canon. When you write, you’ve created a new work on its own. It can be, but does not have to be, limited by the source material. Canon is not the end-all, be-all.

for the writer’s blocked: It doesn’t need to be perfect. Sometimes you have to move on and commit a few writing sins if it means you can create better things out of it.

for the lost: You started writing for a reason; remember that reason. It’s ok to move on. You are more than your writing. It will be here if you want to come back.

THIS IS SO IMPORTANT I’M GONNA DO THIS TOO

Omg yes!!

I had this exact experience. I worked in a bookstore and although the sci-fi/fantasy section was filled with books I’d read, I had to admit to a customer that I hadn’t read LOTR.

Her eyes got wide and she gave me a big smile and said, “Oh! I’m so jealous of you! I wish I could it read it again for the first time.”

And yes, I read LOTR ASAP after that.

THis applies to everything.  I had a mate looking for new TV shows. I tried to keep mostly mainstream as his tastes differ from mine, but then found out he hadn’t seen preacher or misfits.  “Are you gonna smack me if I haven’t seen them?”“YOU LUCKY BASTARD YOU ARE IN FOR SO MUCH  JOY!”
