Today (August 2nd 2017) Donald Trump introduced his new bill alongside Senators Tom Cotton of Arkansas and David Perdue of Georgia. The bill is called the Reforming American Immigration for Strong Employment Act or RAISE Act and it’s intent is to slash legal immigration levels in half over the next 10 years. Here’s what you need to know.

What Will The RAISE Act Do?

With the intention of cutting immigration, the RAISE Act will do the following:

It will limit the number of green cards awarded to foreigners each year.

It will prioritize green card awards to those who speak English, can financially support themselves and have job skills useful to the U.S.

It will cut the number of refugees allowed into the U.S. by half to 50,000 each year.

It will eliminate the Diversity Visa Program aka the green card lottery that randomly awards green cards to applicants.

It will reform the way extended family members of U.S. citizens get green cards by giving those with work-based skills priority.

It will prohibit those immigrants who hold green cards from receiving welfare (although they will still be required to pay into the state and federal tax system).

About a million immigrants got green cards in 2015, Tom Cotton stated that this bill will bring that number to 600,000 in its first year and within 10 years that number would regularly be at 500,000. Trump, Cotton, and Perdue are calling this a “merit-based system.”

What Trump Is (Now) Saying

During Trump’s campaign he spoke about undocumented immigrants and recently he stated that he did not want to reform legal immigration. When asked if he wanted to “curb legal immigration,” he responded “Oh sure, you know, I want to stop illegal immigration.” He was then asked “Do you want to cut the number of immigrations,” to which he responded “Oh legal. No, no, no. I want people to come into the country legally.“

Perdue and Cotton proposed this bill earlier this year but it didn’t get much attention. Now with a huge healthcare loss, Trump is focusing on the topic that largely appealed to his fanbase: immigration. He’s using the same tactics he usually uses: by stating that immigrants are hurting the country and citizens. “Among those who have been hit hardest in recent years are immigrants and minority workers competing for jobs against brand new arrivals. It has not been fair to our people, our citizens and our workers,” Trump said.

Will This Bill Pass?

Currently the congressional Democrats are resisting the bill and some moderate Republicans too - mainly ones in states with large immigrant populations. There’s also a huge amount of opposition from immigrant rights groups and business leaders.

Trump is saying that immigrants hurt the economy but opponents are pointing out that they actually boost the economy. Trump stated the bill “will reduce poverty, increase wages and save taxpayers billions and billions of dollars.” Economists are also pointing to the low unemployment rate, 4.4 percent last month, as evidence that there are relatively few Americans who are without jobs now, and that, as Baby Boomers retire, there will be a labor shortage.

The RAISE Act will likely have a tough time passing in the Senate and the House however with the small majority, the republicans could squeak it by.

What About That Press Conference?

After Trump’s announcement press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders and senior adviser Stephen Miller had a press conference where things got… heated. Miller was questioned about the bill from reporters and as a response he started to hurl insults, he dismissed all questions about Trump hiring foreign workers, and argued with reporter Jim Acosta. It’s really something that can only been seen or read in it’s entirety so here’s a video of the exchange and here’s the full transcript of the press conference.

Finally, during the press conference Sarah Huckabee Sanders read a piece of Trump fan mail (which is now a new tradition) from a little boy, Frank, who wanted to mow the White House lawn. She used this as to make the point: “It’s our responsibility to keep the American dream alive for kids like Frank, immigrants who are already here and those who dream of immigrating here in the future.”

You can read the full 40 pages of the RAISE Act here.

People say Anime is a Mistake yet 2017 is looking to be the worst year for Western Animation with such extraordinary gems like Boss Baby, The Emoji Movie, Nut Job 2, Despicable Me 3, and Lightning McQueen dies the movie.

Bad western animation: Generic Child Makes Fart Jokes

Bad anime: I Can’t Believe My Little Sister Turns Into A Dragon When I Squeeze Her Titties

Western Animation: Literally a bunch of talking food having a massive orgy and say “fuck” over and over.

Western Animation: Fat man and nag wife make offensive jokes that are passed off as “satire” and their dog repeatedly gets battered and beaten in a graphic manner by a baby who also makes offensive jokes and says swears for the sake of “humor.”

Western Animation: You remember the Teen Titans?? Yeah they have R@NDUMB HUM0R XDDDD now!!! Remember the Powerpuff Girls?? They reference outdated memes now. Remember *thing we liked during childhood*?? THEY CAN TWERK NOW. Gotta cater to the kiddies! What, you, a fan of the old series, doesn’t like it? Then we’ll create a caricature meant to mock you, because fuck fans.

Anime: Single father cooks food for his daughter because it makes her happy.

Anime: Lesbian witch with a gun obliterates Nazis.

Anime: Remember Sailor Moon? Well now she’s back and in this version, we’ll be keeping closer to the manga’s story and art style. Wait, the animation in the first two seasons was bad? We’ll gladly fix that in the third season, because we actually care about fans.

…but also.

Western Animation: Cute bunny cop teaches us why prejudice is bad no matter who you direct it at.

Western Animation: Boy with many moms learns to use the powers he inherited from his dead mom, and along the way, manages to help prejudical people see the light.

Western Animation: A team of five dorks, lead by a gorgeous princess, battle aliens inside of robot lions that can all turn into a giant humanoid robot, and learn to bond with one another.

Anime: Soda cans turn into girls when sipped out of.

Anime: Girls who make terrible butt puns use their asses to fight each other. Somehow, this is considered a sport.

Anime: Guy has a literal angel with big titties fall from the sky and she starts calling him “Master.” Two more angels also fall from the sky. All three fall in love with him and he gets the first one to remove girls’ panties and bring them to him and shit like that.

Gee it’s almost like good and bad animation exists no matter where it comes from and that opinions and tastes are subjective so some of the “weird” anime will be good to some and not to others and some people may also like the “weird” Western animation but not the stuff people consider “good”

Gentrification creates a stifling homogeneity in urban areas that makes it less suited for the everyday lives of the lower class and more suited towards the leisure and tourism of those with expendable income.

An old, decrepit laundromat gets replaced by an upscale bakery? And people are mad? It’s not that the poor hate organic vegan cupcakes, it’s that most of us don’t have a way to do laundry in our own home.

Run-down corner stores replaced by hand-made designer clothing boutiques? We don’t hate your eco-fabric shawl, but I can’t eat that for dinner after work like I could have a can of beans I grabbed from that corner store when I don’t have time to take the bus to the real grocery store after work.

What gentrification brings in and of itself is not typically bad, it’s that gentrification brings institutions of leisure and pleasure and makes it so that the poor have to go farther out of their way for basic necessities. It turns low-income living spaces into local tourist attractions. It can even create food deserts by putting restaurants, grocery stores, etc. in that the majority of the lower class cannot afford.

Imagine if someone totally renovated your house and turned it into a mini theme park - they took away your sleeping space, where you prepare food, where you clean yourself and get ready for your day, and replaced it with things that will please people who are visiting, who have their own homes they can go back to, who are here not for their entire life but just as a distraction from their otherwise mundane existence. It’s not that you hate theme parks, it’s not like you’ve never been to a theme park and vow to never visit one again. It’s just that you need to live! To survive! And the leisure of those who have more than you should not invalidate your existence.

I am glad this has made the rounds. Some people feel a dense misunderstanding or misinterpretation concerning gentrification, and I think it helps to hear a description/explanation of what gentrification is from those who are both affected by it and educated by the culture from which it hails. I and many others enjoy some of the delights of gentrification while simultaneously having their livelihoods threatened by it.

In an attempt to develop some concept of the populations, numbers, and correlations of certain belief patterns in online LGBTQ+ spaces, I have drafted this semi-formal survey.

It is not associated with any academic institution or data collection group. Simply a personal project. As such, it has not been reviewed by the APA or any other formal review groups.

It is extremely long, and will take around 20-30 minutes to complete.

All questions excepting the first two demographics questions are completely optional, so if you do not feel confident in your ability to answer a question, please skip it, or mark it as “blank.”

If possible, please also pass this survey along to others.

If you have questions regarding the survey, or the data collected by it, please send those questions to the ask system on this blog.

All responses are anonymous. The “sign in” feature is to prevent people from spamming the form with duplicate submissions.

You are able to edit your responses after submission, in the event that you wish to change the way you answered a question or questions.

If you wish to take the survey, click here.

Summaries of the survey results will be posted on this blog at 100, 250, and 500 respondents, and every additional 500 respondents after that.

The survey will be closed in one year (August 1st, 2018), or if no new responses have been added for three months (90 days).

Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel

Speaking their lines vs the final product

Why is Vin Diesel looking down? Is he worried he’s gonna forget his line?

Vin Diesel asked the director his inspiration for every line he did and did multiple takes until he was satisfied. He also recorded the line over 1,000 times and also recorded his lines in Mandarin, Portuguese, French, and Spanish so they could use his real voice in those versions. He’s looking at his lines because Vin Diesel is a  dedicated  motherfucking professional.

And then he showed up at the LA premiere like this:

Stilts, people!

Vin Diesel is so fantastic every time I hear people mock him I just want to be like “excuse you, do you know of any other multi-racial actor in Hollywood who’s fronted a blockbuster franchise featuring an unashamedly multi-cultural cast full of primarily non-white actors, and who has done it unapologetically over and over again for *seven* installments? NO, YOU DON’T, SIT THE FUCK DOWN.”

Vin Diesel makes goofy movies like The Pacifier so he can keep making Riddick movies. He even went so far as to found Tigon Studios to make sure the Riddick video game was good (it was awesome).

I love Vin Diesel!

In high school and college, when Vin Diesel really rose to box office prominence, I used to hate Vin Diesel because he seemed like the kind of dumb macho guy that A. made fun of me a lot and B., well, A’s enough, isn’t it?

And then he went on “The Tonight Show” and talked in depth about his high school life as a hardcore D&D player. So. I’m on board with Vin Diesel now. And also, like, don’t judge people by how they look.

i don’t even care about the gifs. reblogging for the comments and cause Vin is my boy.

I thought I read somewhere that Vin has a special copy of the script with actual dialog for Groot so he can capture the right tone for the conversation.

Once upon a time, in a land about twelve hours north of here, I was in the second year of grad school and really regretting all my life choices. Because the professor of the sociolinguistics class I was taking was a post-doc living several states away from her fellow-academic husband, she felt the same and gave our class completely free rein in picking our final paper topic. Since watching Firefly was the only thing that had given me joy that semester, I decided to examine the pidginization of Chinese and English in that universe.

(Tl;dr version: The actors’ inability to use tones is actually probably accurate, and here’s some evidence to back that up. Also, Chinese was used by characters from all walks of life and in a wide variety of social settings, showing a nicely non-stratified mixing of cultures that we unfortunately didn’t get to see much of in rest of the show.)

Introduction (abridged because I don’t have to explain the concept of fandom and conlangs to you, people of the internet)

This duck got himself all in a flap after inadvertently straying into the path of a giant Shoebill while heading towards water.

But it was all water off a duck’s back for the imposing 4ft tall bird which instead of eating his smaller friend, carefully picked him up in his beak and moved him aside.

Despite its fearsome reputation as a predator around water, the Shoebill seemed more concerned with completing its journey than tucking into a feathered snack.

These extraordinary pictures were captured by 51-year-old amateur photographer Mark Kay, at the San Diego Wild Animal Park in the U.S.

‘I thought the Shoebill was going to eat the duck, but soon realised he was moving him out of the way.

‘After the duck fell to the ground, he seemed flustered and just walked away. The Shoebill just carried on.’

This guy is working in the Emoji Movie

The joke is told by itself

i mean the emoji movie looks stupid and i’m not a tj miller stan but he was (ineptly) trying to say that humor is a sign of intelligence, and women’s intelligence (and therefore, their humor) are suppressed by a misogynist society. his exact words were that women are “taught to suppress their sense of humor during their formative years.”

“SOCIETY depresses humor in women bc it is a sign of intelligence,” he tweeted. “that is THREATENING to men, & so women are taught to suppress those intimidations. It is about SOCIETY’s ills, the misogyny of women’s humor. Don’t get it twisted. The world gets better the more we empower our literal better half. Women ARE FUNNY, against odds that men don’t face.” (x)

so i guess a better headline would have been ‘TJ Miller: Society Stifles Women’s Creativity.’

(sidenote, i think he voiced this opinion in a really incompetent way, but the way his words were twisted and taken out of context was just inflammatory.)

Why does everyone say that they played someone ‘like a fiddle’? Fiddles are actually pretty difficult to play? Why not say ‘I played him like a recorder’? ‘Like a xylophone’? ‘Like a triangle’?

I think it’s got to do with detail and subtlety. If you play someone like a fiddle, that’s like, Iago or some shit. If you play someone like a triangle, you just told them there was free food somewhere when there wasn’t.

I’ve once  read the following exchange:

“You played me!”

“Like the cheap kazoo you are.”

Which in my books is a pretty epic burn if we’re going to be making musical comparisons.
