“I didn’t start publishing Pennsylvania’s Orange Street News so that people would think I’m cute. I want to get the truth to people, even if it makes grownups mad,” says 9-year-old Hilde Kate Lysiak, publisher of and reporter for the Orange Street News.

After reporting on a suspected homicide in Selinsgrove, Pa., Hilde was harassed by “disgusted” adults commenting on her site, saying her time would be better spent at tea parties and playing with dolls.

Hilde has something to say, and she takes no prisoners, firing back at her aging critics, with a video and in her column for the Guardian.

how pathetic do you have to be to pick on a literal nine year old

She reported this homicide before MAJOR NEWS OUTLETS had even heard of it. She’s tenacious and strong.

Godspeed Hilde

Adults complain about our generation not doing anything, and then they tell young kids that they shouldn’t be doing great things

This is a couple years old. That kid’s probably mayor of her town by now.

In these dark and dreary times, let us not forget that pets are fucking wonderful and they will love you even if the PEOTUS cuts all of our state’s federal funding because we refuse to stop being a sanctuary.

Pets! They’re so dope! They don’t even know who the President is! And also they need good homes. Especially the old ones. Senior pets are much harder to get adopted because people incorrectly think they’re less cute than baby pets.

November is Senior Pet Adoption Month at the Seattle Animal Shelter and hoo boy do they have some cute (and inexpensive!) older critters. Adoption fees are just $15 during this month if you pick a swingin’ senior.

Trans Lifeline has posted an official response to the misinformation that is currently being spread.

“A Tumblr article by LordHauchefant has been getting shared recently that makes a number of untrue claims about the Trans Lifeline. We decided to go through line by line and debunk post. You can view the original article here.

“Ever since the Presidential Election results came in, there’s been post after post of people spreading around the phone number for a supposed suicide hotline for trans people, called Trans Lifeline.

What people don’t know is that this “hotline” is a huge scam meant to fund the founder’s’ personal lives,…”

Nina Chaubal and Greta Martela are two trans women who were software engineers in San Francisco. When Greta was suicidal, she experienced ignorance, mistreatment, and abuse while trying to get the help she needed. They decided they needed to do something to help other suicidal trans folks, so they left their jobs where they made a combined income of $260,000 in order to found the Trans Lifeline. In 2015, the both dedicated themselves full time to the Trans Lifeline. Greta collected a salary of $28,800 that year, and Nina worked without pay for the first fifteen months of Trans Lifeline, living entirely off of her savings. In 2016, they are each collecting a salary of $30,000 (since they work 70 hours per week on average, that is practically minimum wage) for a combined income of $60,000.

“…and that the hotline barely answers their calls, if ever.”

Since Trans Lifeline launched in November of 2014, we’ve answered 17,064 calls.

“A twitter was made a while back to cover the small, almost nonexistent amount of operators on the line, but it is now inoperable because the founders found out and shut down the source of the twitter bot’s information, because how dare someone provide the truth.”

Kiwifarms is a website dedicated to harassing autistic trans women into dying by suicide. Kiwifarms launched a personal attacks on staff of Trans Lifeline including Greta, Nina, and an intern. This attack included leaving explicit harassing messages, death threats, and attempting to disclose their personal addresses online. Frustrated that their attacks did not dissuade us from offering life-saving support to trans people who were suicidal, Kiwifarms supporters created a twitter bot to defame Trans Lifeline and spread lies. Kiwifarms is being investigated by the federal government as a hate group in connection with this incident and a number of other alleged malicious crimes.”

So if “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” is be believed, you can fiddle duel the devil for your soul. My question is, does it only work with fiddles, or any contest? Saxophone duel? Guitar shred-off? Can you challenge the devil to a rap battle when he comes for you?

Even though I play piano I want to see someone fight for their soul with the tuba.

The Devil went back to Georgia and his thoughts were dark and cold
That Johnny kid had screwed him and he still needed a soul.
When he came across this young man blowin’ on a tuba and playin’ hits
And the devil took one look and said “You know what? Fuck this shit.”

“Kid, I know you won’t believe this, but I play the tuba too
“And if you wanna wager, well I’ve got a deal for you
“If I’m the better tubist, then I get to take your soul
“If you’re the best, you get this horn here, made from solid gold.”

The boy replied, “My name is Hans, and though it may be wrong,
“Your bet’s pretty intriguing, so I guess I’ll play along”

Hans, clean out your spit valves, and get ready for a show,
Two tubas feudin’ face to face; pick up your horn and blow.
‘Cause if you win, you get a brand new tuba made of gold,
And if you lose the Devil gets your soul!

(Oompah music intensifies)

The Devil opened up his case and said, “I’ll start, I guess.”
And fire puffed out from the bell as on the valves he pressed
He raised the mouthpiece to his lips, it made a wicked BLART
And a band of lederhosen demons joined in with him to start

(Roll Out the Barrel plays with extended tuba solo)

Hans looked the Devil in the eye, once he finished his piece,
Said “That’s okay, old man, but just you get a load of this!”

(http://youtu.be/zmFYgc-Emmc and skip to 2:20)

The Devil bowed his head, because he knew he can’t compete.
He dragged that heavy tuba down; it crashed by Hans’s feet.
He turned away from Hans and as he retreated he said,
“Forget this crap. I’m gonna try telemarketing instead.”

(Tuba outro)

@hamstergal you are amazing and owe me 1 clean monitor.

:(((

Fiddles are historically associated with the devil not through any Christian imagery, but because older European folk tradition held that several uber powerful water demons, known as nock, nikyr, necks, etc, were insanely good fiddle players.

In Norway, for example, the violin known as the Hardanger fiddle was played initially by the creepy otherwordly beings, like the hulderfolk, the trolls, as well as the nock. There are equivalents in other European cultures.

These beings were known as preternaturally skilled fiddle players, the nocks above all others. So some people would make a deal to learn the fiddle from the nock, or have their children trained. The only problem being nocks usually needed life or blood sacrifices to learn their skills.

So as Christianity was introduced, the water demon nock was conflated with the devil. Because other stories of nykyrs, nocks, etc were generally sacrificing a human to appease treacherous tides, which was the pinnacle of terror.

The devil knows the fiddle, because the ancient tradition is that if you can win your freedom from the nocks, they will honor this pact.

this post is the perfect mix of creativity, historical facts, and folklore/mythology, and above all shitposting.

via http://ift.tt/2faGoIq:Singer Jade Mya hopes to inspire transgender youth | Toronto Star:
gaywrites:

When Jade Mya was 11 or 12, she remembers a morning when her stepfather stopped her before school because he thought her outfit — a baggy white sweater dress slung over black tights — was too provocative.

The issue wasn’t that the modest ensemble was revealing but instead that Mya had grown up identifying as a boy.

“He got really upset,” Mya recalls. “I still remember that day, him sitting me down, being like: ‘You can’t dress like that. You can’t go to school like that.’ He was freaking out.

“I remember talking back and saying, ‘I’ll go to school like this if I want to. This is comfortable. I like this. I’m different.’”

Perhaps that conversation looms large for Mya because it set so many things in motion; first, the concerned parents who “you could always hear talking at night,” then 18 months of weekly therapy, followed by consultation after consultation with doctors. Finally, she began to transition at 15 years old. Doctors told her she was the youngest person in Canada ever to do so.

Or perhaps she remembers that conversation so clearly now, at age 25, because it was an early instance of Mya retaining the resolve to be herself.

This is a lovely story about a trans country singer in Canada who wants to make sure her fans know who she is and what she stands for. There are so many wonderful possibility models out there; every single story is important.

oh-that-disney-princess-emily:

singing-not-sleeping-beauty:

I was six the first time I went to disney world. It was also the first time I met my step family in florida. See, my grandfather had three wives in his lifetime, and the third wife was the only one I ever met. She had five kids when they married, and moved to Hawaii from the Phillipines. Now jump forward, my dad’s step siblings have families of their own, including my uncle Jett, who married a native hawaiian woman, and had two beautiful daughters.

Back to that first trip to disney. I was six, my sister was ten, and our smack in the middle of that age difference was my cousin Malia at age eight. She, and her younger sister Bella, both took hula classes, because their mother wanted them to stay close to their roots, despite the distance of having moved to florida. We were all pretty young, but we knew enough that the princesses at disney world were actresses in costume.

“How cool would it be to play a princess at one of these parks?” I had said after a long day in the magic kingdom. “I wanna do that one day.”

“Who would you play?” Bella had asked.

“I don’t know. Belle maybe. She’s the only one with brown hair other than snow white, and mulan, and I could never play either of them.”

“Yeah, but you don’t really look like Belle either. Your noses are to different.” Malia had cut in, and I shrugged it off, knowing It’d never happen anyway.

“What about you guys? Who would you play?” I asked them, unaware that there was no answer to that.

“We don’t look like any of them either. There are no princesses from where we’re from.” So we all settled on the sad belief that none of us would ever get to be disney princesses.

Years pass, and I decide that one day I would help write a movie for a princess from either the phillipines, or the polynesian islands, so my cousins could become princesses. Because they held on to that dream. It might have been harder for them to let go of it, because they lived so close to disney.

Now it’s 2014, and Malia has just been hired as a dancer, at the polynesian resort at disney. She started as a swing, and in two years worked her way up to a featured dancer. It helped that she was of polynesian decent.

About a year ago it was announced that disney would be releasing a movie featuring their first polynesian princess, and my cousins & I were all excited, but none of us had high hopes. We all figured they’d make her look more like Rapunzel, the way Anna and Elsa had.

Fast forward a few months. They have just released the first look at moana.

I text my cousin as soon as I see it.

“Did you see Moana?”

“No, why?” I send her the picture above, and a minute later I get a call. “SHE LOOKS LIKE ME! I LOOK LIKE HER!” Malia is screaming into the phone with unabashed enthusiasm. She couldn’t believe that a disney princess bore such a resemblance to her.

Yesterday, 11/16/16, my cousin began her new job at disney world, and I couldn’t be happier that her dream of ten years had been realized.

This is why representation matters. This is one of many reasons why Moana is so important.

Congratulations Malia. I can’t wait to come down and say Mahalo

I am well aware it is not wise to get involved in politics. That said, as a family owned company, our bottom line is not just about money. We value our artistic freedom and always humbly seek to contribute to a more humane, conscious and ethical way to create in this world.

As an immigrant myself in this country, I have been blessed with the opportunity to pursue my dreams in the USA. Dressing the First Lady Michelle Obama for the past 8 years has been a highlight and an honor. She has contributed to having our name recognized and respected worldwide.

Her values, actions, and grace have always resonated deeply within me.

As one who celebrates and strives for diversity, individual freedom, and respect for all lifestyles, I will not participate in dressing or associating in any way with the next First Lady. The rhetoric of racism, sexism, and xenophobia unleashed by her husband’s presidential campaign are incompatible with the shared values we live by.

NOW THIS IS WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT

YES

Everyone needs to stand up

brinconvenient:

DAILY REMINDER: THIS IS NOT NORMAL.

This is not a normal peaceful transition of power. This is not the way that Presidents take office. This is not the way that serious people treat preparing for the office of Chief Executive. THIS IS NOT HOW PRESIDENTS PREPARE TO TAKE OFFICE. THIS IS NOT A NORMAL PRESIDENT. THIS IS NOT NORMAL.

For all of the talk of pranks like removing Ws from keyboards, this is not how Bill Clinton had to prepare George W. Bush to transition the office. This is not how George W Bush had to prepare Barack Obama. This is not how George H.W. Bush had to transition the office to Bill Clinton (and he did it with class). NO ONE HAS EVER HAD TO HOLD THE PRESIDENT-ELECT’S HAND IN PREPARING THEM FOR THE JOB.

There’s truth to the statement that nothing can prepare you for being the President of the United States. It’s a small club with very limited membership and former presidents will often talk about how the only people who understand are other presidents. That’s why they tend not to comment on the current president’s administration, policies and behavior. That’s why George HW Bush (41) was able to tour the world fund-raising for victims of the 2004 tsunami and Hurricane Katrina and doing charity work with Bill Clinton (42) (the man who denied him a second term, remember) during George W Bush’s (43) term as president.

Sitting presidents do not generally feel the need to warn the American public to be wary of their successor. Because up until now, while we’ve had bad presidents were not up to the task, we’ve never had someone so thoroughly unprepared, unserious and unqualified take the job because he treated it like a game show prize.

President Obama warns Donald Trump on Thursday to be mindful, thoughtful and careful when making staffing decisions for your administration. Donald Trump names Neo-Nazi, White Nationalist, Anti-Semite and White Supremacist Steve Bannon as White House Strategy Advisor on Sunday. This is not normal. This is not American. THIS IS NOT PRESIDENTIAL.

I feel so bad for President Obama who has to paint a pretty picture of the shitshow he has a front-row seat he’s watching, and who has to see the country he loves, the more perfect union he has tried to advance, the precious ideas he has taken his turn to steward be passed on to a carnival barker who is as happy to set the tent on fire as he is to shout his self-aggrandizing nonsense and sell tickets to the sideshow.

President Obama has had to be twice as good as any of his predecessors in recent memory and receive four times the shit of any of them (new square-cube law?) and now has to watch it all go up in flames because an ill-equipped egomaniac convinced enough people in enough places that the world was ending and he was the only one who can stop it.
