One of the smallest and easiest ways to get into prison centered activism is to write to someone. Talk to them like a human being. Let them know they’re not alone and that people are thinking of them. Actually care about the individual people that are affected by the things we talk about

LGBT inmates are especially in need of letters–the isolation is beyond imaginable. I really recommend Pink and Black for finding pen pals.

Please please be aware that if you do this they may write to you about things that are triggering or harmful and there won’t be really anything you can do to help them. And if you decide to commit to this, really commit to it. People who are in prison have people failing them all the time - if you are going to become one of them do not start a writing relationship with an incarcerated person. Also important that if you want to volunteer at a prison you cannot write to anyone who is currently incarcerated there.
