Slate Introduces “This is Fake” Chrome Extension
Slate developers and editors released a Chrome Extension to alert people of “fake news” on Facebook. The goal is to both flag and stop its viral spread:
What differentiates This Is Fake from some other, earlier experiments in fake-news prevention is that the banner links directly to an article from a reputable source that debunks the story in question, and it prompts the user to share the debunking as a comment on the offending post. This is the antiviral functionality, one whose success depends on your participation…
…Users who have installed This Is Fake and connected it to their Facebook accounts can also help us build our running list of fake stories and repeat offenders by flagging them for our moderators.
Nieman Lab reports that the extension was created during a post-election hack day, and adds that because defining what fake news actually is is difficult, “This is Fake… is focusing on completely fraudulent, completely fake, no-kernel-of-truth-whatsoever stories — not inflammatory opinion pieces and not, at least at launch, conspiracy theories.
Interested in giving it a spin? You can install it here.
Interested in a different extension? Try BS Detector, which, in its short history was blocked by Facebook before they eventually let it through.
