Okay, here’s the problem with the idea that oppressed groups can “alienate allies” by not being nice enough:
You shouldn’t be an ally because oppressed groups are nice to you. You should be an ally because you believe they deserve basic human rights. Hearing “I hate men” shouldn’t make men stop being feminist. Hearing “fuck white people” shouldn’t make white people stop opposing racism.
Your opposition to oppression should be moral, and immovable. Your belief that all humans should be treated with equal respect shouldn’t be conditional based on whether or not individual people are nice to you.
Holding help getting basic rights/equal treatment as a carrot–and its withdrawal as a stick–to make marginalized people behave the way you want is the worst sort of privilege abuse.
Like, you can’t help the privilege you’re born into (though you can do your best to dismantle it), and you can’t fix the world all by yourself, but you can sure as hell not do this insidious thing.
Like as an ally to POC, sometimes i feel offended or like POC activists are unnecessarily rude to me.
THAT DOESNT MEAN I STOP THINKING THAT RACISM IS A PROBLEM OR THAT SYSTEMS OF OPPRESSION NEED TO BE DISMANTLED???
Like if hurting your feelings is enough to make you stop being an ally, you were never an ally to begin with.
