Right now in the USA, ‘states rights’ is code for "I don’t want to abide by what is required of me to participate in the union.“ It’s a crypto-secessionist statement. As it is used, it is not a patriotic statement but an anti-american one, expressing an almost literal unwillingness to be an United States on issues we should be united on, like civil rights, opposing mass murder, environmental protections, and healthcare.
Hey, dummy…..you mean like sanctuary cities? Where cities and some states only enforce the federal laws they want to? Is that sorta like states’ rights, asshole?
No, because you notice that no or very few people who advocate for sanctuary cities actually call it “states rights”– this is a post about discussing language, not picking apart every single independent action states may do. Because people who don’t care about signalling to a broad base of reactionaries and racists don’t use the language “states rights” to talk about the independent actions of their communities.
If you shout “states rights” in a room, people aren’t going to think about “a state’s right to enforce harsher emissions laws than the federal standard” or “a state’s right to decline detainer requests while remaining within full compliance of federal law.” They are going to think of how southern states tried to reverse racial desegregation, which is what it has meant for decades in our modern world.
But I mean, you might know this if you actually knew what “sanctuary cities” are and that they do comply with all extant federal laws. That’s a Southern Poverty Law Center link btw.
