I’m not sure if I really believe anything as philosophically weird as “gender just is.” Here’s what I really believe:
People–including, but not only, trans people–are happy when you get their gender correct and extremely unhappy when you get it wrong. The cost and risk of doing this seems, to me, to be extremely low. So I’ll do the thing that makes people feel happy and safe.
All the philosophy comes after that.
I may be somewhat lacking in intellectual rigor, but at least I’m not out there trying to ruin real people’s real lives because I’ve decided that the definition of “gender” in a dictionary from 1963 is the hill I’m going to die on.
