Ok consider this:
Taako and Lup love to dye their hair. Like they did it all the time, the crazier the color the better.
One day they do a spell to connect their hair so when one dyes their hair a color it will color the others hair. At first it was just a cool like like “twinsies!!” Then one day Lup goes missing on some new planet during the stolen century. Taako is freaking out even if he knows she’ll just pop up on the ship at the end.
A few days later the tips of Taakos hair has been dyed blood red.
Taako cries that night because he just knows Lup died all alone.
Sure enough at the end of that year Lup tells them with a false joking tone that she got lost and ended up falling off a cliff after being chased by some monster for a few days.
That’s when Taako thinks of an idea. They make up a color table that signals what the hair color means.
Red- danger
Blue- lost
Orange- went north
Pink- went east
Green- went west
Burgundy- went south
Blonde- I’m going to die
Grey- don’t come for me
White: I found the light
So on and so forth. This becomes a thing. Barry knows about it and any time Lup leaves he’s always glancing at Taako to make sure everything is ok.
When they take on their lich forms things get kinda wonky. Taakos hair will stay whatever Lup’s was before she died and Taako can’t change it.
Then they get to their final stop and Lup leaves. Taako is always checking his hair and one day it turns blonde. He doesn’t tell Barry. They never told Barry that one because they didn’t want him to worry.
At this point Taako knows they’re searching for a body or Lup’s spectral form.
Then he forgets.
And he can’t understand why his hair won’t take any color.
