Question for my followers/anyone who sees this: I follow a bunch of booklr and book review blogs, but they’re all YA based. I like YA just fine, but I’d like to also follow some that aren’t… I just don’t know any. Are all booklrs on tumblr for YA?

Can we have a word? I continue to hear from many of you who say you won’t vote for Hillary Clinton because, you claim, (1) she’s no better than Donald Trump, or (2) even if she’s better, she’s still corrupt, and you refuse to vote for the “lesser of two evils,” or (3) you don’t want to reward the Democratic Party for corrupt primaries that gave the nomination to Hillary instead of Bernie Sanders.

Please allow me to respond.

(1) Anyone who equates Donald Trump with Hillary Clinton hasn’t been paying attention. Trump is a dangerous, bigoted, narcissistic megalomaniac with fascist tendencies who could wreak huge damage on America and the world. Hillary isn’t perfect but she’s able and experienced. There is simply no comparison.

(2) Even if you see Hillary Clinton as the “lesser of two evils,” the greater of two evils in this case (if you see the choice in these terms) is seriously evil. You’ve probably had occasion in the past to vote for someone who doesn’t meet your ideals, when the alternative is someone who falls much further from those ideals. This doesn’t mean you’ve sold out or compromised your principles. You’ve just been realistic and practical. Realism and practicality are critically important now.

(3) I understand your frustration with the Democratic Party, and your reluctance to “reward” it for its bias against Bernie in the primaries. But anything you do that increases the odds of a Trump presidency isn’t just penalizing the Democratic Party; it’s jeopardizing our future and that of our children and their children. All of us must continue to work hard for a political system responsive to the needs of ordinary Americans. The movement Bernie energized must not and will not end. But Donald Trump, were he to become president, would set back the cause for decades.

There are just over 7 weeks until Election Day. My request to those of you who still don’t want to vote for Hillary Clinton: Please reconsider. It is no exaggeration to say the fate of the nation and the world are at stake.

Just an FYI, if you guys ever send me an ask & I don’t reply right away, it’s because I’m trying to come up with the best answer, not because I’m ignoring you or I didn’t get it. Sometimes I don’t have a good answer right off the bat, so I don’t wanna just reply with “I don’t know.” You deserve a better answer than that, even if it takes me a little while.

new genre concept: soft apocalypse

the world as we know it has ended and mother nature starts taking back what’s hers. there are no zombies or cannibals or murderous bandits. the most valued members of the community are those who know how to garden and farm, sew and weave, treat wounds, work wood or build with bricks, cook from scratch.

people bond together to begin rebuilding instead of killing each other. everyone teaches each other whatever they do know and works together to figure out the stuff none of them know. books become incredibly valued resources because they’re often the only way to learn critical information. if someone is elderly, disabled, or otherwise unable to work at the same level as most of the community, they’re taken care of by the others, not told any sort of “survival of the fittest” bs.

as the generations ware on, communities begin expanding into small cities. some of the settlements even find ways to repurpose solar or wind power on a small scale and have electricity in some of their buildings. storytellers wander the countryside telling tales of the old world in return for some hot stew or a place to rest for the night, and the mythos of the new world start to incorporate elements of the past. the only thing that remains constant is that humans survive, and they do it by working together.

Try Earth Abides by George R. Stewart

Oh man, definitely try Earth Abides. I loved that book so much and, like Anhilation by Jeff Vandermeer, I thought that if the apocalypse had to happen, this would be a somehow very comforting way.

i would also recommend Station Eleven, the author’s name escapes me but it has a similar approach and bonus star trek references. I loved that book.

I also recommend Yokohama Kaidashi Kikō!  Also the song No Hurry by Vixy and Tony!  Also I sometimes try to hit these notes in my Reverend Alpert the Traveling Exorcist serial, but humanity still has its nasty impulses so I’m not sure it’d quite rank.

Further recommendation: the roleplaying game “Flatpack: Fix the Future” by Filomena Young and David Hill

“Maui Costume for Kids - Disney Moana” $44.95 - $49.95 “Your little one will set off on adventures in this Maui Costume featuring the demigod’s signature tattoos, rope necklace and island-style skirt.”
: : source : :

Ok we’ll get to this costume in a minute…

First, some genuine kudos to the production team of Moana, out later this year. They appear to hit the mark on some key points:

The story calls attention to the South Pacific region with a princess who needs to “save her family from annihilation.” Islands in this area are desperate to address the climate crisis, and need more advocacy in the media. (Here’s one of many case studies).

Accuracy & Inclusion - Tattoo historians, anthropologists and island elders, called “The Oceanic Story Trust,” were key advisors throughout.

Writer Taika Waititi has Maori heritage. Hollywood tells a lot of stories about people of color without input from the groups they represent, so Taika’s involvement is a win.

Composer Opetaia Foa'i is a Samoan native. He brings instruments from the region, with songs written in Samoan and Tuvaluan languages.

Actors Dwayne Johnson, Auli’i Cravalho, Temuera Morrison : Cravalho is a Hawaiian native, Morrison is Maori, and Johnson is of Samoan descent, with traditional pe’a tattoos.
(Ok Hawaii is in the North Pacific, but Disney’s still come a long way since JTT and Jeremy Irons played East African characters.)

Now for the costume and the brownface of it all…

“Culture as Costume” is never a good thing for humans to do to each other, and “Skin as Costume” has a history of mocking and dehumanizing people of color.
That said, free speech is important and ignorance is legal.

The bigger issue here is Corporate Colonialism. Disney is mass-producing brown, tattooed, South Pacific skin suits. A giant company is (literally) profiting off the backs of less powerful minorities, commercializing sacred tattoo practices, and not a dime of it goes back to support the region.

As mentioned above, these people are in crisis. They are also outnumbered. To plunder from them without compensation or political advocacy is to perpetuate colonialism.

Disney does have the right to try anything they can to turn a profit on this film. As mindful consumers, though, it’s on us to put away our wallets and speak up.

TLDR: See the movie if you want, but boycott the merch.• • •
Comments are open, opinions are welcome.
Thanks so much for reading, being interested and engaged.
With love,
Morgan @tattrx

Support the movie, please boycott the Maui brown suit and any Moana brown suit if that is also a thing.

my favorite trope is “a being who’s immortal & been alive for centuries doesn’t have their life together at all & is a complete fucking mess” b/c it’s both comforting & relatable that a powerful entity who’s been around for centuries has no fucking clue what they’re doing at all times & has just been walking through hundreds of years w/ their hands up like “don’t know what the hell i’m doing but i’m just trying to have a good time & eventually (hopefully) die!”

The problem is that even if Trump loses all of the people who support him still exist and are still out there creating the social climate that allowed him to get this far in the first place.

Someone put it into words. It’s terrifying.
