Fact #650: You are allowed to like “girly” things even if you’re not a girl. You’re allowed to like “boyish” things even if you’re not a boy. Your interests doesn’t invalidate your gender.

I just really love concept art
Sketchy concept art
Concept art that would never be realistic for a full movie
Concept art that looks nothing like what the movie turned out to be
Concept art that looks pretty much exactly like what’s in the movie
Concept art by amazing inspiring people
Concept art for the parks
Concept art

in a relationship with healthy communication, arguments should end with understanding on both ends

you have to keep the goal in mind

do you want to win? or do you want to understand that person and resolve the issue? (ask yourself once, then ask again)

the ego loves to win an argument, but relationships are not about feeding your ego

healthy relationships dilute the ego

if you find yourself arguing to win in your relationship, consider what you value more: the love you share with that person, or protecting your ego

“Her fantasy novel Children of Blood and Bone, the first of a trilogy about a young girl’s battle with a prince over bringing magic back to West Africa,  is going to be released some time next year. But it’s already got a seven-figure publishing deal with Macmillan, and a massive deal with Fox Studios too, with the latter acquiring the movie rights pretty early on in the day for a book that hasn’t even been published yet.”

I forgot to tell you guys the cutest Passover story!

So last week my congregation held its annual communal Seder (I led it, actually!) and after dinner, all of the kids went off to find the Afikomen. I thought I heard them say they found it out in the foyer, but then when I went to check in on their progress, a few of them told me the search was still going on. Another ten minutes passed, and when I went back out in the foyer, most of the kids were just hanging out, watching on and giving hints while the smallest of the children looked around for the Afikomen.

I asked them what the deal was and they explained to me that the guy who had initially hid the Afikomen put it up in a spot that was kind of high, so naturally it was the older kids who found it. They decided this wasn’t fair to the others, so the 11-12 year-olds re-hid it for the 7-10 year-olds, and then told them that once they had found the Afikomen, that they should then re-hide again it for the 4-6 year-old kids.

So without any adult input, a group of about 15 children between the ages of 4-12 made the group decision to have an equal-opportunity Afikomen hunt for kids of all ages and sizes.

I just think that’s the best and sweetest thing, and it makes me so proud of the kids at our schul and gives me hope for the future.

ultimately i think kindness is the most radical thing you can do with your pain and your anger. it’s like, you take everything awful that’s ever been done to you, and you throw it back in the world’s teeth, and you say no, fuck you, i’m not going to take this.  you say this is unacceptable. you say that shit stops with me.

humans are fucking terrible and this awful world we live in will fucking kill you but if you are kind, if you are brave and clever and try really hard, you can defy it. you can impose on this bleak and monstrous structure something beautiful. even if it’s temporary. even if it doesn’t heal anything inside you that’s been hurt.

i’m gonna sleep and i’m gonna wake up and i swear by everything in this deadly horrible universe i’m gonna make someone happy.

i’ve seen a number of comments and tags where people feel that they must swallow or repress their anger in order to engage in kindness. that is not at all what i am recommending here. radical kindness is an expression of anger. it is not passive. it is not repressive. it does not require you, in any way, to forgive those that have fucked you up. it does not require you to be quiet.

it just requires that you be kind. viciously. vengefully. you fight back. you plant flowers. give to charity. play games. pet someone’s dog. scream into the dark. paint and write and dance, tell jokes, sing songs, bake cookies. you have been hurt and you don’t have to deny that hurt. you just have to recognize it in other people, and take their hand, and say: no more. enough. fuck this. no more.

have a cookie.

i will say this again: we are all going to die. the universe is enormous and almost entirely empty. to be kind to each other is the most incredible act of defiance against the dark that i can imagine.

it just requires that you be kind. viciously. vengefully.

Bolding for emphasis. Because I am angry at the state of the world right now, so very angry. And I am trying to channel that anger into helpful, kind actions.

This isn’t because Burger King is nicer in Denmark. It’s the law, and the US is actually the only so-called “developed” country that doesn’t mandate jobs provide a minimum amount of paid vacation, sick leave, or both.

kinda debunks that claim that they can’t afford to pay their workers those sort of wages and still make a profit

Its corporate greed, plain and simple.

It is the same in Sweden. It is so funny every time an american company opens up offices here and then tries to do it the american way and all the unions go “I don’t think so”.

Like when Toys ‘r Us opened in sweden 1995.

They refused to sign on to the union deals that govern such things as pay/pension and vacation in Sweden. Most of our rights are not mandated by law (we don’t have a minimum wage for example) but are made in voluntary agreements between the unions and the companies.

But they refused, saying that they had never negotiated with any unions anywhere else in the world and weren’t planning to do it in Sweden either.

Of course a lot of people thought it was useless fighting against an international giant, but Handels (the store worker’s union) said that they could not budge, because that might mean that the whole Swedish model might crumble. So they went on strike in the three stores that the company had opened so far.

Cue a shitstorm from the press, and from right wing politicians. But the members were all for it, and other unions started doing sympathy actions. The teamsters refused to deliver goods to their stores, the financial unions blockaded all economical transactions regarding Toys ‘r Us and the strike got strong international support as well, especially in the US.

In the end, Toys ‘r Us caved in, signed the union deal, and thus their employees got the same treatment as Swedish store workers everywhere.

The right to be treated as bloody human beings and not disposable cogs in a machine.

and that story right there? is exactly why Republicans in the US work so hard to bust unions. it’s because unionizing WORKS and they’re terrified of workers actually having some power.
